Professional Development vs. Professional Learning

Professional development and professional learning sound like the same thing, but they are not. Sarah Caron, from Education World, says the main difference between the two is that professional development is often conveyed to an individual, while professional learning is unregimented. Companies and institutions often pay for their staff’s professional development courses/lessons, however, professional learning is usually free, and done on an individuals own time, based on their interests. Professional learning consists of taking new information, experimenting with it, and applying it. In professional development, learners are inactive.

It is extremely important for educators to stay updated with how society functions, therefore, they must take advantage of the digital resources that are available to them. Educators can teach using technology, and also can learn through technology. First of all, many apps/programs are easily accessible and free (i.e. Twitter or Pinterest). These apps allow individuals to connect with colleagues or others in related fields. This creates a professional learning community, where people can share ideas, advice, strategies, resources, etc. Online communities combat isolation, and promote communication due to the constant flow of current information.

I experienced learning through technology during our class Twitter chat. Although it was very fast-paced, I was able to gather resources from other students, and converse about children and technology. It allowed me to hear other’s opinions, and state my own. I was able to see different perspectives on certain topics, which I think is beneficial.
