Playshops!

Playshops are educational and interactive activities that encourage creativity and collaboration amongst peers. Each playshop is unique; they can be art, science, literacy, or technology based. These activities provide children with the opportunity to use their prior knowledge to further extend their strengths and understanding of the world around them. The video below is an example of a design playshop.

Design playshops allow children to create their own technological devices using recycled or natural materials. In this specific playshop, children are encouraged to explore and use everyday materials to create string phones. The process of making these phones aid children in developing an understanding of sound and how it travels.

Through trial and error, children can discover, which materials work best depending on string length, cup size and material, tightness of the string, and overall construction. Once children find out which design works best, they can continue to use these phones for communication purposes throughout play.

Play shops can inspire children’s imaginations and spark their interest in learning beyond what they already know.
